What is paraffin?

Paraffin, also known as liquid paraffin, paraffin oil or kerosene, is a combustible hydrocarbon liquid that’s burned as a fuel. Paraffin fuel refers to a mixture of different types of hydrocarbons with the chemical formula CnH2n+2; specifically paraffins are a group of alkanes.

Paraffins are key components of petroleum and natural gas. Those with fewer than 5 carbon atoms per molecule tend to be gases at room temperature, whereas those with between 5 and 15 carbon atoms are usually fluid in form. Straight-chain varieties with over 15 carbon atoms per molecule are solid at room temperature.

Paraffin oil is less hazardous than gasoline and boils at 150-275^oC. It can be extracted from coal, wood and oil shale, but is mostly acquired from the distillation of petroleum.

When first discovered, the cost of producing paraffin was high, but prices fell when new sources and cheaper methods of refining were later uncovered.

The paraffin is generally mixed with mineral oil (7 parts paraffin to 1 part of mineral oil) and placed in a thermostatically controlled heater . The affected body part is dipped into the paraffin bath and then removed to allow the paraffin to solidify. This procedure is repeated up to 10 times. The affected body parts are placed under an insulating sheet for approximately 20 minutes, and then the paraffin is stripped off and returned to the thermostatically controlled heater to melt and use again. This technique is usually not undertaken with acutely inflamed joints and can be used only after anti-inflammatory drugs have begun to treat the acute inflammation.

Food grade, colourless and completely odourless protection agent. The oil is not soluble in water and does not form a membrane. The product is not flammable or hazardous to health. Suitable for the protection of untreated wood surfaces such as heat-treated panels and timber, kitchen wood and cutting boards, as well as sauna benches for dirt and impurities. The oil is colorless, but it deepens the natural tone of wood. 1 liter is sufficient for about 10-20 m² to be treated.
