Description
Formaline is a colorless liquid. Due to formaldehyde off-gassing, it has a strong, irritating odour. Since the PH of this solution is neutral, it can be used as a reducing agent to reduce other substances when making formic acid. Formaline solutions with a high concentration of formaldehyde are flammable. Since they can destroy dangerous microorganisms, this solution can be used as disinfectants and germicides. Aside from that, they have a dehydrating effect, the ability to preserve themselves, and the ability to combine with proteins, inactivating them and destroying cells. Formaline is widely used in aquariums to destroy parasites that live on fish because of these properties.
Formaldehyde has a wide range of applications, including:
1. **Preservation**: Commonly used in funeral homes and medical labs to preserve biological specimens and in some cosmetics and antiseptics.
2. **Disinfectant**: Acts as a disinfectant and fumigant in various settings like hospitals and animal facilities, and is also used to sterilize vaccines.
3. **Embalming**: A key ingredient in embalming fluids.
4. **Drug Testing**: Utilized in certain drug testing processes.
5. **Photography**: Plays a role in photographic processes.
6. **Automotive**: Important for manufacturing resins used in components, coatings, and adhesives in vehicles.
7. **Chemistry**: Used to create printing inks and to polymerize with other compounds for products with enhanced durability and heat resistance.
8. **Fuel Efficiency**: Blended with fossil fuels to improve fuel efficiency in vehicles.
